Sophora japonica - Japanese Pagoda Tree
An attractive medium to tall tree with rounded canopy and unusual feathery, pinnate foliage. The Japanese Pagoda Tree produces creamy white, butterfly-like clusters of blossoms as the summer ends. The pretty pendulous flowers completely envelop the trees rounded crown. However, the Japanese Pagoda tree needs to be approximately 30 years old before it first starts blooming. A hanging yellowish podlike fruit appears after flowering adorning the drooping branches. The open structure of twisting branches that makes up the crown looks marvelous when bare, offering architectural and decorative value during the winter months. In the autumn months, the foliage turns an impressive golden yellow.
